This is not a history of Checkpoint Charlie, but rather a documentary in musical form. The bulk of the recorded material comes from direct interviews with ex-Charlie soldiers. Some of these men are willing to share their memories with us, but we are not interested in a nostalgic trip down Checkpoint Charlie Memory Lane. We are looking essentially for mythology: soldiers peering into the Great Red Void on the northern end of the street, being told that they will have to hold the front line when World War III begins. At the heart of te project lies Berlin itself, how to get in, how to get out. A city "fenced in” by a "foreign” power. The ghosts of Weill and Eisler haunt the contemporary music of Dominic Muldowney, and the project is equally a celebration of Berlin’s personal musical references. All of the elements are strictly documentary, but will serve the musical structure, a form somewhere between Feature and Ars Acoustica.
